Community Art Project
We are excited to announce a new shared creative adventure bringing together visual art, poetry and prose- all inspired by Lyme Regis and the landscape around it. This is an exciting opportunity to bring together creative ideas in both art and writing, to celebrate our environment and to produce a beautiful joint publication supported by exhibitions.
What's the plan?
Over roughly 18 months, we hope to build towards a curated collection of artwork and writing, a high-quality art book and one or more exhibitions. Along the way we'll document the journey itself through photographs, sketches, notes and works in progress. The project covers the coast from Seaton to Bridport and inland through Uplyme and the Marshwood Vale. From cliffs, harbours and hedgerows to hidden valleys, there's a great deal to respond to.
A project that belongs to you
The project will grow through the people who join it. There’s no pre-set plan or committee directing every step: the committee is helping to launch the project, but is down to members to shape what comes next. You don't need to be both an artist and a writer, and you certainly don't need a finished idea to join in.
How it will work?
We’ll meet informally to share work, swap ideas and spark new collaborations. At our regular demonstrations, a project table will be open for anything you’d like to share: a painting, poem, photograph, craft, page of notes, work in progress or even an experiment that didn’t go to plan. Every stage of making has a story.
Each month, we’ll offer an optional creative prompt—a word, image, theme or quotation to interpret in any way and any medium. Our first comes from John Keats’s To Autumn:
“Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.”
What does that season look and feel like here? Perhaps it’s changing light on the sea, mist settling over the Marshwood Vale, the colours of cliff and beach, a quieter Cobb, fading wildflowers, laden hedgerows or the first turning leaves along a familiar lane. Follow the contrast between coast and countryside, or simply the feeling of summer giving way to autumn.
